Relying on artificial intelligence for cognitive tasks may diminish our own mental effort and insights. As large language models become more integrated into daily tasks, individuals may trust their outputs too readily, mistaking fluency for genuine understanding. The struggle involved in critical thinking, often yielding deeper insights, is essential and cannot be bypassed. While AI can enhance learning by revealing patterns and stimulating curiosity, individuals must engage in cognitive processes personally to foster genuine understanding and intellectual growth.
AI is fast, fluent, and increasingly everywhere. I use them and rely on them. They've changed the nature of my own intellectual life.
There’s a certain cognitive sleight of hand that happens with LLMs. Because they’re so good at sounding right, we begin to trust the performance of understanding as if it were our own.
If you’re not doing some of the lifting yourself - if your mind is a passive participant - you’re not building anything.
These systems can amplify learning in remarkable ways. They can help us see patterns we'd otherwise miss.
