"By reaching to the heart of the nation, we believe that we can reach to the heart of all Americans across the United States, and by being able to deliver the peace message from there, we think that we can reach to all these American people across the United States, said Neeraj Bajracharya, government liaison and press coordinator for the walk."
"The 18 monks, two of whom are following a Buddhist practice of never lying down during the three-month journey, were in North Carolina on Saturday, their 83rd day on the road. Led by the Venerable Bhikkhu Pannakara, who is conducting the walk barefoot, they have already overcome a serious injury to one member of the group as they head towards Washington DC. Pannakara undertook a 112-day walk across India in 2022, also barefoot, but has found the American roads to be more challenging."
Eighteen Buddhist monks are walking 2,300 miles across the United States to promote peace, loving-kindness and compassion, stopping at state capitols and drawing crowds. The three-month Walk for Peace began on 26 October from a Vietnamese Buddhist temple in Fort Worth, Texas, and passed through Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama en route to Washington DC. The group is led by the Venerable Bhikkhu Pannakara, who walks barefoot and treats foot injuries daily. Two monks are following dhutanga practices, avoiding lying down. The walkers plan to ask Congress to recognize Vesak as a federal holiday and have amassed over a million social media followers.
