Visa woes leave Jamaican side down 10 players against Galaxy
"Mount Pleasant, a team from the Jamaican Premier League, is bracing to be without as many as 10 players on Wednesday when it takes on the LA Galaxy of MLS in a Concacaf Champions Cup matchup. The reason: Those players, including six from Haiti, were unable to get visas to enter the U.S. for the match, Jamaican officials said."
"The U.S. has travel restrictions on citizens from some nations, including Haiti, though there are mechanisms that can assist athletes in some cases. The Jamaican club has been dealing with the issue since at least last week, apparently to no avail."
"Officials said Monday the match is still set to be played as scheduled, even while the Jamaican club -- which plans to add younger players from the academy level if necessary -- and Concacaf seek a solution."
Mount Pleasant, a Jamaican Premier League team, will compete against LA Galaxy in a Concacaf Champions Cup round of 16 match on Wednesday while potentially missing up to 10 players. Six of these players are from Haiti and were unable to obtain U.S. visas for entry. U.S. travel restrictions on certain nations, including Haiti, have prevented their participation despite available mechanisms for athletes in some cases. The club has been addressing this visa issue since at least the previous week without resolution. Mount Pleasant plans to supplement its roster with younger academy-level players if necessary. The match proceeds as scheduled, with the second leg scheduled for Kingston, Jamaica on March 19.
