The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) admitted to deleting body camera footage from a boat crash site that resulted in a teenage girl’s death. The officers present, including Keith Hernandez, mislabeled their footage, leading to its deletion after 90 days despite FWC policy requiring retention for criminal investigations. This is the second instance within a month where critical footage has been lost. The incidents raise serious concerns about the protocols in place for handling evidence in investigations of such tragic events.
Body-camera footage has to be retained in criminal investigations, the FWC's own policy stipulates.
Ashlee Sklute said Thursday. The revelation came after the Herald requested Hernandez's body camera footage from the night of the crash, Sept. 4, 2022, and was told there was none.
