Rory McIlroy to defend Players title despite withdrawal from Invitational
"While warming up in the gym this morning, I felt a small twinge in my back. As I started hitting balls on the range before the round, it worsened and developed into muscle spasms in my lower back. Unfortunately, I'm not able to continue and have to withdraw. I was excited to compete this weekend."
"Rather than pursue a second Arnold Palmer Invitational win, McIlroy headed across the state to his home in West Palm Beach, where he will rest and take further medical advice before his planned arrival at Sawgrass, in the north of Florida, at the start of the week."
Rory McIlroy withdrew from the Arnold Palmer Invitational 35 minutes before his third round after experiencing lower back muscle spasms during warm-up. The Northern Irishman prioritized protecting his fitness for the Players Championship and Masters, both tournaments he is defending. After shooting 68 on Friday and sitting four under par, McIlroy decided against risking further injury. He traveled to his West Palm Beach home for rest and medical consultation before heading to Sawgrass for the Players Championship. This marks only the second withdrawal in McIlroy's PGA Tour career and his first since 2013. A fitness update will be the focus of his Wednesday press conference.
