"Initial teams had already dived to identify and mark the entrance to the cave system where the Italians disappeared. The cause of the deaths remains under investigation. The recreational diving limit in the Maldives is 30 metres."
Rescuers located the bodies of four Italian divers deep inside an underwater cave in Vaavu Atoll, Maldives, four days after they were reported missing. The bodies were found in the innermost part of the cave, well inside the third segment, which is the largest section, and were located pretty much together. Three Finnish deep and cave diving experts identified the bodies with support from Maldives police and military. Plans call for recovering two bodies the next day and possibly the remaining two the following day. A fifth Italian diver’s body was found earlier outside the cave. The divers were exploring a cave at about 50 metres depth, exceeding the Maldives recreational limit of 30 metres. Search efforts had been suspended after a local military diver died from underwater decompression sickness, and rough weather repeatedly hampered operations. The cause of the deaths remains under investigation.
