The Miami Heat encountered financial constraints during the offseason, limiting their ability to be disappointed. The Houston Rockets' pursuit of Kevin Durant obstructed the Heat's potential plans to acquire him while maintaining future assets. Miami's efforts ultimately fell short, adding another missed opportunity to their history. After missing out on Durant, the Heat successfully acquired Norman Powell, who is expected to reduce the offensive burden on the team’s stars. Although Powell lacks Durant's star quality, his acquisition for minimal cost is regarded as a significant success that aids the Heat's competitive ambitions.
Had it not been for the Rockets' aggressive efforts, the Heat could've executed a near-perfect "gap" year plan. One that would've consisted of acquiring KD while keeping their future relatively unscathed.
Miami was able to steal a borderline All-Star talent for, basically, expiring contracts. That has to be considered a huge win for the Heat.
Powell doesn't carry the star power that KD has, and he's still not the offensive powerhouse that KD is even in this late stage of his career.
It's difficult not to imagine how much excitement that would've surrounded the Heat had they pulled off the move for KD.
