'Not the Ritz': Gimenez tours Krome, has no issues with treatment of detainees
Briefly

During a recent visit to the Krome detention center in Miami, Congressman Carlos Gimenez expressed satisfaction with the facility's management, calling for increased recreational opportunities for detainees to help them burn off energy. This perspective, however, contrasts sharply with concerns raised by his Democratic colleagues, who reported unsatisfactory conditions, including overcrowding and poor hygiene. The visit follows protests by detainees demonstrating against their living conditions, raising broader questions about the overall treatment of individuals in detention facilities under current immigration policies.
"One of the recommendations that I'm going to make is to allow for more recreation time, because actually that's one way you burn off energy," Republican U.S. Rep. Carlos Gimenez of Miami said.
"It is not the Ritz, but there is nothing in there that would be cause for an alarm," Gimenez said.
"They are very small intake rooms with 25-35 men, all cramped in. They eating and sleeping. Deficating and also using the restroom in those cramped spaces." - U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz.
Earlier this month, a group of Cuban detainees at the facility protested the conditions by aligning their bodies in the recreation yard of the facility to spell SOS.
