The shooting occurred early Sunday, around 3 a.m., during an argument, leading to the driver brandishing a firearm, which is against county regulations for transit operators. Despite both passengers being rushed to a hospital, they could not be saved. The driver was detained but not charged. Local authorities and the transport union expressed deep condolences over the unsettling event, highlighting a significant violation of safety protocols.
"Transit operators are not allowed to be armed," Juan Mendieta, a spokesperson for Miami-Dade's Department of Transportation and Public Works, told the Miami Herald.
"We are devastated by the tragic events that unfolded in Miami Gardens and extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives," the Transport Workers Union Local 291 said in a statement.
