Briefly

In a tragic and unprecedented incident, an 89-year-old man named Robert Markel was mauled to death by a black bear in Florida, alongside his dog. The attack, which occurred on May 5, is noted as the first such fatality in state history. Witnesses reported seeing the bear attack the dog, prompting a 911 call. Subsequent investigations revealed portions of Markel's remains in the bear's stomach. Authorities have fatally shot three bears from the area to identify the one responsible through DNA testing, coinciding with another bear mauling this year.
A massive black bear, weighing close to 300 pounds, is believed to have recently mauled to death an 89-year-old Florida man and his faithful dog - the first such killing in state history.
The dog was dead by the time Collier County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene, according to the Naples Daily News. And Markel was nowhere to be found.
Officials searched the area and found three bears, which they fatally shot and are testing for DNA to identify which was responsible for the horrific killings.
Authorities explained that the FWC receives an average of 6,300 bear-related calls annually, and has documented 42 prior incidents of physical contact with people since the 1970s.
