Florida jury awards $3 million to man seriously injured by defective airbag in crash
Briefly

A Miami-Dade jury awarded $3 million to Jose Hernandez, who sustained severe injuries from a defective Takata airbag in a 2020 automobile accident. Hernandez was in a minor crash that triggered an airbag malfunction, causing metal shrapnel to pierce his arm. He sued Takata Airbag Tort Compensation Trust Fund, established during Takata's bankruptcy, highlighting ongoing issues with Takata airbags. This case is part of a larger series of recalls and injuries linked to the manufacturer's use of ammonium nitrate in inflators, which can explode dangerously if deteriorated by environmental factors.
"When the airbag was supposed to protect me, it ended up causing life-altering injuries due to its defective design," said Hernandez, underscoring the serious implications of faulty airbags.
"We filed this lawsuit to hold Takata accountable for their negligence which led to my injuries, and to raise awareness about airbag safety hazards that exist out there," Hernandez's attorney stated.
