Jose Javier Rodriguez, the CubanAmerican Democrat seeking to rescue the Florida attorney general's office from Trumpism
Jose Javier Rodriguez, a Democratic candidate for Florida attorney general, opposes turning away from Alligator Alcatraz, an immigrant detention site west of Miami. He says that if elected, he will investigate how the DeSantis administration established the facility and used it for political theater. Rodriguez claims DeSantis signed an emergency executive order that seized local government land, bypassed the legislature, and redirected $500 million intended for disaster preparedness to build the facility. He argues the project was designed to demonstrate disregard for basic human treatment and the law. He also says Florida’s attorney general office has functioned as an extension of the governor’s political arm and that he wants to restore it as a check on power. His Republican opponent is James Uthmeier, appointed by DeSantis.
"In Florida a Republicanrun state that has been at the forefront of Trump's antiimmigrant offensive the attorney general's office has become an extension of the governor's political arm, Rodriguez says. He aims to reclaim the office as an institutional check that protects the public interest. A lawyer by trade, Rodriguez served as a state representative from 2012 to 2016. He was later elected state senator (20182020) for District 37, which covers part of MiamiDade County, and served as deputy labor secretary in the Joe Biden administration."
