South Florida is noted for its history of sensational crimes. Notable incidents include Rudy Eugene, the Miami Zombie, who brutally attacked Ronald Poppo on the MacArthur Causeway in 2012, resulting in long-term injury for Poppo. In another case, Alberto Mesa heinously murdered and beheaded his girlfriend, then presented her severed head to a police officer while nude. These examples are indicative of Miami's reputation for shocking and extraordinary criminal acts throughout its history.
Ronald Poppo made it to 65 despite living on the streets of Miami for more than half of his life. On Memorial Day weekend 2012, Rudy Eugene attacked Poppo on the MacArthur Causeway, causing severe injuries. Eugene refused to stop his assault when confronted by police, leading to his death. Blood tests revealed marijuana but no explanation for his actions.
Alberto Mesa committed a horrific crime by stabbing his girlfriend 111 times, beheading her, and presenting the severed head to police under a Metrorail station. He was nude when he threw the head at an officer and announced his crime.
