Student Wellness Ambassadors Make Campus Supports Inviting
Briefly

Colleges recognize the importance of mental health for student retention and persistence, leading to increased investments in wellness facilities and services. A recent survey indicated that 70 percent of college presidents have committed resources towards this cause. An example is the University of San Diego's Palomar Health Student Wellness Center, which includes various health and fitness amenities. To enhance utilization, the center has recruited student leaders as wellness ambassadors to improve awareness and education about available mental health resources, addressing prior gaps in student knowledge and engagement.
Kimmel Yeager, the executive director of the Palomar Health Student Wellness Center, noted, 'I was just instantly overwhelmed; how do I get that information as a new employee? Where do I go? Then I'm talking to students, and I'm so excited ... and they were like, 'Yeah, we never know where to go.'"
A 2023 survey found that while 73 percent of college staff said a student health clinic was available on campus, only 33 percent of students knew about it.
