Leia Rivera moved from the Bronx to a quiet, predominantly white Connecticut town just before ninth grade and experienced culture shock and social isolation. High school social dynamics intensified loneliness and contributed to a decline in mental health. By sophomore year her mental health had reached rock bottom. Geometry teacher Douglas Brocksmith noticed behavioral changes, pulled her aside for a private check-in, and left a handwritten yellow post-it sharing a personal connection about his daughters similar struggle and offering hope. The message encouraged Rivera to get help for her depression and altered the course of her life.
