Cynical depression is a challenging form of refractory depression that can be hard to identify due to its unique manifestations. Unlike typical depression, which often includes lethargy and sadness, individuals suffering from cynical depression may exhibit behaviors fueled by adrenaline, such as anger and jealousy, or sedated behaviors like entitlement. This form of depression is marked by a pervasive distrust of others and breeds paranoia, often leading sufferers to blame external success and the happiness of others for their own dissatisfaction.
Adrenaline masks include risky behavior, chronic resentment, anger, jealousy, envy, dogmatic zealotry, and abuse of others. Adrenaline provides a surge of temporary energy and confidence that changes facial expressions and body language so that they don't look depressed.
Cynical depression breeds paranoia. It's a short step from regarding people as lacking sincerity or integrity to attributing malevolent and persecutorial intentions to them.
