North Kingstown, R.I. police officer dies by suicide, department says
"To our fellow officers and first responders: you are never alone, and reaching out for help is a sign of strength."
"In the short time she served with our department, her field training officers recognized her commitment and the promise of a successful career. Our department mourns this loss. Brittany's passing is deeply felt by her family, friends, academy classmates, and all her brothers and sisters in law enforcement."
"Brittany relished in her time spent with family and friends. She loved listening to music from rap to musicals. When she wasn't working or spending time socializing, Brittany could be found working out at the gym."
Brittany Dougal, a 29-year-old police officer from Cranston, Rhode Island, died by suicide on March 4 after struggling with mental illness. She graduated second in her class from the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy in December and was sworn in with the North Kingstown Police Department shortly after. During her brief service, her field training officers recognized her commitment and promise. Dougal previously worked in security at McLean Hospital and Mass General Brigham. She was raised in Massachusetts, attended Framingham State University where she played softball, and was survived by family members including a twin sister. The department emphasized that officers should seek help, noting that behind every badge is a human being.
