A federal survey indicates a decrease in depression and suicidal thoughts among teens from 2021 to 2024. Serious suicidal thoughts among adolescents dropped from nearly 13% to 10%, while suicide attempts fell from 3.6% to 2.7%. Additionally, episodes of major depression decreased from 21% to 15%. Despite these improvements, 700,000 teens attempted suicide in the past year, emphasizing the need for continued support. Experts suggest that increased communication about mental health and access to treatment may be contributing factors to the positive changes.
The report shows that the prevalence of serious suicidal thoughts in 12- to 17-year-olds fell from nearly 13% in 2021 to 10% in 2024.

Harkavy-Friedman noted that one reason for the improved statistics might be that more teens are discussing their suicidal thoughts with others.
