Modern Morals: My fiance, who is in recovery, and I are planning a dry wedding - should we let guests know on the invites?
"He doesn't like being around heavy drinking now and I'd kind of be the same myself"
"My fiancé accepted he had an issue with alcohol and spent 12 weeks in a treatment centre last year."
"We made the decision afterwards that I would give up drinking too."
"I never had a problem with it, but we knew it was best for his recovery. I don't miss it at all."
My fiancé accepted he had an issue with alcohol and spent 12 weeks in a treatment centre last year. We decided afterwards that I would give up drinking as well to support his recovery. I never had a problem with alcohol personally, but I agreed it was best for his long-term sobriety. He now avoids heavy-drinking environments, and I feel similarly about being around heavy drinking. Giving up alcohol has not been difficult for me, and I do not miss drinking. Mutual abstinence has become part of the recovery process and of our shared lifestyle.
