The findings show that 43% of students in halls feel isolated where they live, while 44% find it hard to make friends there; 87% feel the type of accommodation they chose at university affected their feelings of isolation."
"The fact that I have my phone means I can use it to just reach all my friends back home, she said. Especially within first year. One in three students in halls of residence are often lonely, with another 37% occasionally feeling lonely or isolated. Many students cite difficulty meeting people outside their flat or room (45%), spending most of their time studying or working (39%), and noise or the environment discouraging socialising (26%). Large shares feel isolated where they live (43%) and find it hard to make friends there (44%). Most students (87%) say the type of accommodation they chose affected their feelings of isolation. Technology and reliance on phones can reduce efforts to form new friendships, especially in first year.
