Bethlem Royal Hospital, the oldest psychiatric hospital globally, will display a poetic lament for Jack the squirrel, a pet of patient James Hadfield. James Hadfield attempted to assassinate King George III in 1800 and was committed due to severe mental health issues. This new exhibit, opening August 14, is part of an ongoing presentation of art by former patients and artists addressing mental health, showcasing unique installations such as Night Tides by Kate McDonnell.
James Hadfield, a patient at Bethlem, gained notoriety after attempting to assassinate King George III in 1800 during a theatrical performance, which led to an insanity plea that transformed legal precedents for mental illness.
