The Golden Gate Bridge suicide-prevention net spans the full 1.7-mile bridge and coincided with a sharp reduction in deaths. There were 8 suicides in 2024, a 73% decline from the pre-net annual average of 30. Last year recorded 4 suicides, an 87% decline, with zero suicides from June through December. Signage with crisis counseling information already existed, but advocates said signage alone was insufficient. The project cost $224 million and was funded by federal, state, and private sources. Some survivors and advocates argue funds might be better directed to mental health services.
