Frank Bruno given freedom of the City of London
"means more to me than the MBE"
"I think there's a lot more needs to be achieved by men like us... coming out and saying, 'I don't feel too good, I don't feel right, I'm doing crazy things and doing odd things',"
"Bruno's "tireless campaigning work" regarding men's mental health had "certainly" saved lives."
Frank Bruno received the Freedom of the City of London for sporting achievements and mental health campaigning and said the honour means more to him than the MBE. He was diagnosed with bipolar disorder after retiring in 1996 and has been sectioned several times. He founded the Frank Bruno Foundation in 2017, which provides a non-contact boxing programme for people suffering or recovering from mental health difficulties. City of London officials credited his campaigning with saving lives. He encouraged men to speak out when they feel unwell. Bruno began boxing at nine, became amateur British champion at 18, won the WBC heavyweight title in 1995, and retired in 1996.
