Floating in Darkness Can Calm Us and Quiet the Brain
"Our bodies are comprised of mostly water. Salty water comprises 71% of the earth's surface (NASA, September 25, 2025). These are facts of nature. We are a part of nature. Therefore, perhaps it's time to mainstream conversations about flotation of the human body in salt water as a potential way to reconnect us to that which is natural and potentially good for mental health. Existing research supports this."
"Flotation-REST (Reduced Environmental Stimulation Therapy) is another option to the psychoactive effects of psylocibin, wine consumption, or meditation or hypnosis to achieve an alternate state of consciousness and lowered stress reactance. It requires a person to float in a heated-to-skin-temperature water tank or pool. The water is saturated with salt to buoy the body and produce a weightless flotation experience."
Human bodies are mostly water and 71% of the Earth’s surface is salty water. Floating in salt water in darkness supports perception of reduced time passage and decreased awareness of self. Flotation-REST uses heated-to-skin-temperature, salt-saturated water to buoy the body and create a weightless, sensory-deprived environment that is quiet and dark. Flotation-REST can induce alternate states of consciousness similar to effects from psylocibin, alcohol, meditation, or hypnosis and can lower stress reactivity. Flotation experience can relieve emotional pressures, reduce unhealthy self-centered preoccupation, and serve as a water-based healing approach within diverse well-being frameworks.
