"You want to look for behavioral cues,"
"You may notice they may withdraw from loved ones or activities. There may be things they used to enjoy doing but are not doing anymore. Sometimes there's also a change in drug or alcohol use or behavior."
New York City's suicide rate remains below the national average but increased after the emergence of COVID-19 and ranks among the top ten causes of premature death across the five boroughs. Suicide rates rose among Latino New Yorkers over the last decade, including a 9% increase between 2018 and 2022 and a 3% average annual increase among Latino males from 2013 to 2022. Rates remain higher among LGBTQ individuals and are increasing among men ages 18 to 24 and younger adults generally, while rates among minors have stayed largely unchanged. Common warning signs include social withdrawal, loss of interest in activities, changes in drug or alcohol use, verbal expressions of hopelessness or worthlessness, feelings of being a burden, joking about death, irritability, anxiety, and noticeable sadness. Prompt engagement when behavioral or mood shifts occur is important.
