"A month ago, I got on a Zoom with Alex Campbell, a writer and ADHD coach, to talk all things attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. At the time, Campbell, a Brit, was over in London, on holiday from New Zealand where he lives. He seemed frazzled, and it probably wasn't just the jet lag. His kindergarten-aged daughter kept running into the room as we spoke, wanting his attention. To my understanding, it seemed the perfect personification of ADHD - a task interrupted by uncontrolled distractions."

ADHD involves both distractibility and intense focus channeled toward personally interesting activities rather than objectively important tasks. An ADHD brain prioritizes interest over external importance, producing hyperfocus on engaging pursuits and neglect of routine responsibilities such as showering or meeting deadlines. Such patterns can look like a CEO working frenetically at night while others struggle with daily self-management. Some coaches reject the phrase "suffering from ADHD" and describe the condition as nuanced. Many men receive ADHD diagnoses in middle age after long periods of undetected symptoms. ADHD remains widely underdiagnosed, and men in the U.S. are more likely than women to be diagnosed.
