Leah Shanahan, a 23-year-old from Tralee, Co Kerry and a University of Limerick graduate, created the world’s first fully accessible saliva-based pregnancy test for visually impaired women. The test communicates results through touch, sound, sight, and a webpage, providing multiple ways to receive outcomes. The saliva-based approach offers a non-invasive sample method. The design was inspired by Shanahan’s personal experience with visual impairment and aims to increase independent access to pregnancy testing while reducing reliance on sight-dependent result formats.
