This Treatment Could Reverse Osteoarthritis Joint Damage With a Single Injection
""At the moment, the options for many patients are either a massive, expensive surgery or nothing. There's not a lot in between," Evalina Burger, professor and chair of the Department of Orthopaedics at CU Anschutz, said via a statement."
""Our goal is not just to treat pain and halt progression, but to actually regenerate the tissue that has been lost due to osteoarthritis," said Stephanie Bryant, a biomedical engineer leading the Colorado team."
Osteoarthritis, affecting one in six individuals over 30, is a degenerative joint disease with no cure, leading to pain and mobility loss. The Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) has funded initiatives to find a cure, including a $33.5 million grant to the University of Colorado Boulder for the NITRO project. This project aims to develop an experimental therapy that could reverse joint damage through a simple injection, offering hope beyond current surgical options.
