The simple way to beat travel sickness, according to scientists
"For those who get carsick, there's nothing worse. The combined feeling of nausea, cold sweats, dizziness and a headache means you're desperate to reach your destination as soon as possible. While some advice might be to 'look at the horizon' or breathe into a brown paper bag, it's hard to know what will work or what's an old wives' tale. Now, a study into the issue has revealed a surprisingly simple solution that can slash symptoms in half."
"Using a specially calibrated driving simulator, the team induced car sickness in 30 participants and then played different types of music while they tried to recover. Joyful music alleviated carsickness the most, reducing it by 57.3 per cent, they found. This was closely followed by soft music, that alleviated symptoms by 56.7 per cent. Passionate music reduced motion sickness by 48.3 per cent, while playing sad music turned out to be slightly less effective than doing nothing."
A calibrated driving simulator induced carsickness in 30 participants, who then listened to various types of music while attempting to recover. Joyful music reduced symptoms by 57.3%, soft music by 56.7%, and passionate music by 48.3%. Silence produced a 43.3% reduction, while sad music produced only a 40% reduction. Music offers a non-invasive, low-cost, personalised option that avoids pharmacological side effects such as drowsiness. Soft music may relieve tension that exacerbates carsickness, while joyful music may distract by activating brain reward systems. Cheerful or gentle music can help alleviate nausea, dizziness, and headache during travel.
