It's a treatment that has been used for things like tendon or ligament injuries before - but not in this way. His consultant Shiying Hey and her team have so far treated 10 patients - all reporting an improvement in their voices. "It's incredibly exciting to be able to offer this treatment," she says."
A man damaged his vocal cords after contracting a rare strain of HPV as an infant, undergoing 21 operations by age six and left with scarred cords and a croaky voice. He struggles to project or sustain speech, affecting social and professional interactions. An ENT clinic is trialing platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections into the vocal folds, using the patient's own blood to encourage regeneration. The technique has prior use in tendon and ligament repair. The clinical team has treated ten patients who have reported voice improvements, and the consultant highlights cost and healing advantages.
