Texas Mom Gives Birth to 'Huge' Baby - and Gives Him a Fitting Name
"When doctors lifted him up, the operating room fell silent - then erupted. "There was this gasp and everyone just went, "Oh, my God,' all at once,' Smith, 35, tells TODAY.com. "I was lying there totally out of it, like, 'What? Is he OK?'" That's when Smith turned to her best friend, who was there for support. "She just looked at me and said, 'Girl, he's huge.'""
"'He reminded me of the Michelin Man! Just rolls and rolls.' The baby she had named Canyon was already living up to the name. Smith, 35, had gestational diabetes with all three of her pregnancies, a condition that can lead to unusually large babies. Her first two children weighed 8 1/2 pounds each, but Canyon tipped the scales at 12 pounds, 10 1/2 ounces - just shy of 13 pounds - far larger than anything Smith or her medical team predicted."
Markie Smith named her third child Canyon during pregnancy. The baby was delivered by cesarean on Dec. 18 at Arlington Memorial Hospital and surprised the operating room with his size. Canyon weighed 12 pounds, 10 1/2 ounces, far above the typical 6 to 9 pounds for full-term babies. Smith experienced gestational diabetes in all three pregnancies, a condition associated with larger babies; her first two children weighed 8 1/2 pounds each. Family and friends gave playful nicknames such as 'the Grand Canyon' and 'Super Cooper.' Canyon spent a week in the NICU learning to breathe independently.
