"This project brings together advances in resorbable bioelectronic interfaces and advanced biomaterials to tackle the challenge of accelerated wound healing,"
"Leveraging components and expertise already proven here at Northwestern, we have an opportunity to push this concept toward field and clinical deployment."
An integrated Regenerative Bioelectronic System (REBIOS) combines a regenerative antibacterial hydrogel with a wireless electrotherapy device to accelerate wound healing, reduce infection risk, and enable continuous in-wound monitoring and on-demand electrical stimulation. Both hydrogel and wireless device achieved prior proof-of-concept validation independently. A four-year, $4.7 million Defense Health Agency grant via the Medical Technology Enterprise Consortium funds development of the combined system. Resorbable bioelectronic interfaces and advanced biomaterials form the technical foundation. The project targets a simple, scalable, and reliable system for field and clinical deployment to promote tissue regeneration and infection control in skin injuries.
