"At Mechnikov Hospital, our rules say we need to start surgery in the first two hours after admission,"
"We implemented a new strategy, which we call early and comprehensive surgery,"
"In one operation, we perform all stages,"
Mechnikov Hospital in central Ukraine treats life-threatening head injuries from the Russia-Ukraine war and is located about 60 miles from the frontline. The hospital treats many traumatic brain injuries caused increasingly by Russian drone strikes. Dr. Andriy Sirko, head of neurology, has performed roughly 2,000 war-related operations since 2014 and leads rapid-admission protocols that aim to start surgery within two hours. The team practices an 'early and comprehensive surgery' approach that combines decompression, removal of skull fragments, vascular repairs, and skull reconstruction in a single operation when possible. Titanium mesh and screws are used to replace missing skull portions.
