"Studies have conclusively shown no link between the drug and the condition, despite the nonsense we heard from US president and his health secretary"
"Last week we heard yet another outrageous statement from US health secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr. At a press conference last week he said that clinical and laboratory studies suggest a potential association between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes including autism and ADHD."
"Acetaminophen (trade name Tylenol) is known in Ireland as paracetamol and is one of the most widely taken drugs during pregnancy, used by about half of all pregnant women worldwide, to treat pain and fever."
Extensive research finds no causal link between prenatal acetaminophen (paracetamol) exposure and neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism or ADHD. Clinical and laboratory findings have been cited by some as suggesting a potential association, but larger and more rigorous epidemiological studies do not support causation. Acetaminophen, marketed as Tylenol and known as paracetamol in Ireland, is among the most commonly used medications during pregnancy, with about half of pregnant women worldwide using it to treat pain and fever. Current evidence supports acetaminophen as an appropriate analgesic and antipyretic option in pregnancy when used as directed.
