An experimental gene therapy targeting the OTOF gene has demonstrated durable hearing improvements in patients with inherited deafness. The study found that 90 percent of recipients experienced enhanced hearing, with half achieving normal levels after 2.5 years. Younger patients showed the most significant gains, while adults also benefited, albeit to a lesser extent. The OTOF gene mutation accounts for a small percentage of deafness cases, but the research platform can be adapted to address other genetic causes of hearing loss.
