Girl, 6, has sight restored through gene therapy
"Having the gene treatment has been life-changing, it's like someone waved a magic wand and restored her sight in the dark. She's thriving and you wouldn't know she had the condition just by looking at her."
"Saffie's diagnosis came as a huge shock to us as we'd never heard of the condition or knew me and her dad Tam were carriers. It was such a rollercoaster of a journey, but we were so relieved and grateful when we heard there was a treatment available on the NHS."
Saffie Sandford, a six-year-old girl with Leber's Congenital Amaurosis, underwent Luxturna gene therapy, which restored her sight. Diagnosed at five, Saffie faced potential blindness by age 30 without treatment. The therapy involved injecting a healthy gene copy into her eyes, significantly improving her vision. Her mother expressed relief and gratitude for the NHS treatment, describing the experience as life-changing. Saffie's peripheral sight has also improved, allowing her to thrive without visible signs of her previous condition.
