"I had a blood clot that was restricting blood and oxygen getting to my brain. What caused my stroke was really high blood pressure. I never knew I was living with such high blood pressure."
"We need to really expand access to blood pressure support so that people can get their checks and that people can take their blood pressure seriously."
"According to the Stroke Association people should use the FAST method to identify the condition. Face weakness, Arm weakness, Speech problems, and Time to call 999 if you see any one of these signs."
Jonathan Ashworth, 47, who represented Leicester South from 2011 to 2024, experienced a stroke on New Year's Day caused by a blood clot restricting blood and oxygen to his brain. He experienced stiffness in his left arm and loss of sight in his left eye. Ashworth attributes the stroke to previously undiagnosed high blood pressure, which he had not been aware of. He had postponed a routine health check with his GP. The former shadow secretary of state for health and social care is recovering with NHS assistance and has begun rehabilitation, including short runs. He advocates for expanded access to blood pressure support and urges people to take blood pressure checks seriously.
