A sperm donation made in 2005 led to at least 197 births across Europe. The donor unknowingly carried a genetic mutation that dramatically increases the risk of cancer. A sample from the donor was sent to a fertility clinic in Ireland but that clinic did not record any resulting pregnancies. The donor sperm was nevertheless used in fertility treatments at other clinics and produced at least 197 children. Some of those children have already died. Concerns have arisen about medical screening, donor traceability, and long-term health monitoring for donor-conceived offspring.
