Damien Martyn declares I'm back!' after leaving hospital following meningitis
"My life was taken out of my handswhen meningitis took over my brain, and unbeknownst to me I was placed into a paralysed coma for eight days to help me fight this awful disease, he said. After being given a 50/50 chance of surviving, I came out of the induced coma 8 days laternot able to walk or talk. This experience has reminded me of how fragile life is, how quickly everything can change + how precious time is! Bring on 2026 I'm back!"
"A BIG thank you to ALL my family, friends and so many other people who have reached out to me, Martyn said. There are so many wonderful people in this world from paramedics (at Mermaid Waters Ambulance), doctors + nurses (at Gold Coast University Hospital) to family, friends and people I didn't even know. I feel like I met all these fantastic people in the past three weeks, or they reached out to me through messages of love and support."
Damien Martyn was diagnosed with meningitis that caused infection and swelling of the fluid and membranes around his brain and spinal cord. He was put into an induced coma on 27 December and given a 50 percent chance of survival while being treated in a Gold Coast intensive care unit. He remained in the paralysed coma for eight days and woke unable to walk or talk. Doctors were surprised when he regained speech and movement just four days after waking. He expressed gratitude to paramedics, doctors, nurses, family, friends, and many others who reached out with support. Martyn described the experience as a reminder of life's fragility and preciousness and announced he was ready for 2026.
