Donal became unwell while cooking a Sunday family lunch for ten, experienced worsening abdominal pain, and went to A&E. Doctors diagnosed appendicitis and removed his appendix during an operation at the Mater Hospital. He spent the night in hospital, was photographed hooked up to medical devices, and praised the doctors, surgeons, nurses and porters for their care. He received get-well cards from his sons Noah (seven) and Oliver (five). He expressed relief at catching the condition early, joked about possibly the sticky toffee pudding, and later complimented the hospital meal while on the mend.
