Skydance acquired Paramount, owner of CBS, shortly after Paramount settled a lawsuit brought by President Donald Trump claiming a CBS News edit of a "60 Minutes" interview aided Vice President Kamala Harris. The lawsuit had slim legal prospects, but the settlement was perceived as helping obtain required governmental approval for the merger. Shari Redstone, Paramount's controlling shareholder, led 13 months of negotiations and remained the public face while personally withdrawing from settlement talks. Redstone faced accusations of greed and conflicts of interest and cited the Oct. 7 Hamas attack as prompting her desire to exit and to confront antisemitism and racism.
Although Ms. Redstone personally withdrew from settlement talks, she remained the public face of Paramount and CBS as nonexecutive chair. She was accused of greed, conflicts of interest and selling out CBS News. One all-caps headline on the widely read Drudge Report described her as the 'Woman Who Destroyed CBS News.'
Once that happened, I wanted out. I wanted to support Israel, and address issues around antisemitism and racism.
