"Which? found Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Gemini and ChatGPT to be amongst the most impersonated brands as the popularity of AI services soars. Separate research from the group last month found that instances of digital squatting' website scams were up 68 per cent from 2021 to 2025."
Consumer organization Which? identified more than 28,000 unsafe websites in January that impersonate trusted brands including Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Gemini, and ChatGPT. Scammers employ typosquatting, registering domain addresses with common misspellings of legitimate company names to trick visitors into believing they've reached genuine sites. When users accidentally visit these fraudulent pages, they're prompted to provide personal information under the pretense of interacting with trusted retailers. Research conducted with tech company Decodo reveals digital squatting scams increased 68 percent between 2021 and 2025. The rise in AI service popularity has made AI-related brands particularly vulnerable to impersonation attacks.
