"I've been watching the Banner since its very first days, and what they've been able to accomplish in such a short period of time has been remarkable,"
"I think local journalism is the most important thing to save in America right now, and [figuring] out how to do that has been my entire life mission. I can't imagine anywhere that has a better shot at showing how it should be done than the Banner."
Audrey Cooper will become editor-in-chief of The Baltimore Banner on October 13, succeeding founding editor Kimi Yoshino. Cooper previously led WNYC and served as editor-in-chief of the San Francisco Chronicle, where she oversaw a transition toward profitability. Brian McGrory has been interim editor since Yoshino's departure to The Washington Post. The Banner won its first Pulitzer Prize less than three years after launching, recently removed "Baltimore" from its domain to expand statewide coverage, operates a paywall with over 70,000 paid subscribers, employs about 95 journalists, and seeks financial sustainability before initial philanthropic funding is exhausted.
