Renowned SF magazine's latest issue harkens back to beloved era
"Issue 80 comes packaged in a three-ring binder sporting a trio of Lisa Frank-esque smiling dolphin characters on the cover that look pulled straight from the late 1980s and early 1990s. Inside, there are eight other school-themed art objects, which clip into the binder and serve as canvases for short fiction, including one story written in the form of a Scantron test."
"A few of the standout pieces include an accordion-shaped treatise on flowers by Pulitzer Prize finalist Yiyun Li and a 48-page sketchbook of drawings from Sacramento cartoonist Adrian Tomine. The issue will ship out to the magazine's nearly 6,000 subscribers, with the remaining 3,000 copies available for sale online and in bookstores for the retail price of $46 on November 20."
"Although perhaps best known for its satire website McSweeney's Internet Tendency, the San Francisco publishing house founded by author Dave Eggers in 1998 has built a mini empire over the years, which includes literary magazine The Believer, children's mag Illustoria, the Quarterly Concern, and a book publishing arm that releases between five and 10 titles per year. The whole operation is run by a skeleton staff of roughly a dozen employees,"
