Poynter names Tracey Compton as the Indianapolis Public Editor - Poynter
"The Poynter Institute, a global leader for 50 years in strengthening ethical journalism and building audience trust, is proud to announce the hiring of journalist Tracey Compton as the Indianapolis Public Editor. Compton is an experienced journalist and communications professional. Most recently, she was the senior media and communications coordinator for the global humanitarian organization Mercy Corps, where she handled many responsibilities including conducting media coverage analysis on humanitarian efforts in places of protracted conflict like Sudan, Gaza and Haiti. She is based in Indianapolis."
"Compton's position is a unique one. There are only a handful of public editors in the U.S., including Poynter's senior vice president Kelly McBride, who serves NPR. But most tend to work for a single news organization. As the Indianapolis Public Editor, Compton will serve as a media critic, focusing on news coverage across Indiana's capital and largest city , not just from participating newsrooms."
The Poynter Institute has hired Tracey Compton as the Indianapolis Public Editor. Compton previously served as senior media and communications coordinator for Mercy Corps, conducting media coverage analysis on humanitarian efforts in Sudan, Gaza and Haiti. She will act as a media critic for Indianapolis, examining how local newsrooms understand and provide coverage aligned with community needs. She will publish regular columns answering audience questions and explaining how local journalists make coverage decisions. Her work will appear in partner newsrooms including public radio and TV, Mirror Indy and the Indiana Capital Chronicle, and additional newsrooms can join by emailing indypubliceditor@poynter.org. The pilot program is funded by the Lumina Foundation and the Hearst Foundation, and she will work closely with Kelly McBride, Nicole Slaughter Graham, and Amaris Castillo.
