"With Neil Brown taking the lead, Poynter is rising to meet the profound challenges facing journalism and democracy, not just in America but around the world. Poynter's future is in strong hands."
Neil Brown has been elected chairman of the Poynter Institute's Board of Trustees while continuing his role as president, effective March 5, 2026. He succeeds Paul Tash, who retired after serving as chairman for 20 years and maintaining a nearly 50-year association with Poynter and the Tampa Bay Times. Brown previously served as editor of the Tampa Bay Times for seven years before joining Poynter as president in 2017. Poynter is a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening journalism through teaching, fact-checking, media literacy, and publishing. The institute owns the Tampa Bay Times and was established 50 years ago by Nelson Poynter, who bequeathed the newspaper to the institute upon his death in 1978 to ensure independent local ownership.
