Monkey gives birth months after foot was saved from amputation
"Masaya is a very experienced mum and she's parenting magnificently. Lagertha is only a few weeks old and is very dinky but already curious about the roloway monkey habitat and inquisitive about us. The fact Masaya's foot has healed so well is a huge relief. If she'd had an amputation, we'd have been left with real questions about whether she could hold her offspring or continue with her normal behaviours."
"The 15-year-old monkey underwent a complex operation last summer to remove a golf ball-sized mass. Vets at Chester Zoo, collaborating with University of Liverpool surgeons, adapted techniques for the procedure, as no prior examples existed for roloway monkeys. The intervention saved all but one of Masaya's toes."
Masaya, a 15-year-old endangered roloway monkey at Chester Zoo, underwent complex surgery last summer to remove a golf ball-sized mass from her foot. Veterinarians from Chester Zoo and University of Liverpool surgeons adapted surgical techniques for the procedure, as no prior examples existed for this species. The intervention successfully saved all but one of Masaya's toes. Months after recovery, Masaya gave birth to her daughter Lagertha, now several weeks old. The successful birth and Masaya's continued parenting abilities demonstrate the importance of the surgical intervention, as amputation would have raised serious questions about her capacity to care for offspring and maintain normal behaviors.
