The Irish Independent discussed producers' concerns over President Trump's recent tariffs that may undermine the Irish film industry. Notable producer Larry Bass criticized the lack of alignment from the current Minister for Culture, Patrick O'Donovan, regarding EU levies and their effects on film funding. He argued the tariffs would not benefit Hollywood, which faces challenges from internal factors rather than foreign competition. The tariffs have generated uncertainty in global film planning and finance, highlighting the need for clarity and effective communication in the industry.
The EU already issued levies for content provided into the EU, so anyone collecting subscriptions in the EU gets to spend a portion of funding in the EU.
Our minister decided not to bring that in and here we are with the US completely overriding all that. There's no such thing as a level playing field with Trump tariffs.
The announcement had done was create confusion and complete clarity was necessary for the film industry across the globe, due to long-term planning and financing for movies.
Despite Mr Trump stating he wanted to resuscitate Hollywood, the tariffs won't affect that in any shape or form. Hollywood's decline had not been down to foreign film.
