"I did see him, I was reversing into a parking spot and talking to someone from the Late Late Show, handsfree, and I then did a swear word and said: 'I've almost killed David McCullagh'."
"The right answer there is to say, 'oh, the pie is big enough for all of us,' but no, I am going to Newstalk to grow the audience. Bring it on"
"Pat is an icon, a legend. We presented together on Prime Time - not many people remember that - myself, Miriam and Pat. I remember something he said to me when we were presenting, 'It's 90pc showbusiness'. I remember thinking, 'No, it's not. It's current affairs,"
Claire Byrne will leave RTÉ after more than a decade to take over Newstalk's mid-morning show from February 3, replacing Pat Kenny. Byrne intends to grow Newstalk's audience and embrace direct competition with former RTÉ colleagues David McCullagh and Oliver Callan. Byrne recounted a recent near-accident with McCullagh and described playful finger‑wagging, signalling a competitive but collegial approach. Byrne acknowledged Pat Kenny's stature and called his example memorable, citing a remark about broadcasting being '90pc showbusiness' that challenged her view of current affairs. Byrne decided to move after turning 50 and expressed enthusiasm for the new role and the broadcast rivalry.
