"More than a third of the nation's local newspapers have folded in the last 20 years, with the Western U.S. being especially hard-hit, including significant losses in Utah and New Mexico."
"High Country News is teaming up with local and national partners to create a West-wide corps of environmental reporters, known as the Western Environmental Reporting Collaborative, or WERC."
"Each partner will host a WERC reporter starting this July, including organizations like Montana Free Press, Wyoming Public Media, and Ouray County Plaindealer, focusing on critical environmental issues."
Over a third of local newspapers in the U.S. have closed in the past two decades, with the Western U.S. particularly affected. Utah and New Mexico have seen significant losses. Cuts to public media funding exacerbate the information crisis in rural and tribal areas. In response, High Country News is launching the Western Environmental Reporting Collaborative (WERC) to place environmental reporters in local newsrooms across the West, starting with partners in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and Arizona to enhance coverage of critical environmental issues.
